Land Clearing in MetroWest MA: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Land clearing is one of those jobs that homeowners consistently underestimate — until they see what it actually takes. Whether you're prepping a lot for construction, building a new driveway, or reclaiming years of overgrowth in your backyard, here's what the process actually looks like.
Start with a Site Assessment
Before any equipment touches the ground, we walk the property. We're looking at what's there (species, sizes, density), what's staying (trees or landscape features you want preserved), access (how and where equipment can get in and out), underground utilities (Dig Safe should be called), and proximity to wetlands or conservation land. That walk determines the scope, the equipment needed, and the timeline.
Check Permits Before You Start
This is the step most people skip — until a neighbor calls the town. Requirements vary significantly across MetroWest municipalities. Sudbury has tree bylaws that may require permits for removing trees above a certain diameter. Concord, Wayland, Weston have their own regulations around work near wetlands and conservation land. Call your town's Planning or Conservation office before major clearing work.
What Equipment Gets Used
Depends on the job: Chainsaw crews for selective clearing, chipper to process brush, skid steer or mini excavator to move logs, or full excavator for large-scale clearing. We bring what the job requires.
What the Site Looks Like After
After clearing, you'll have a level, debris-free area ready for the next phase of your project. You'll have wood chips from processed brush (can be spread as mulch or removed), cut logs stacked or removed, and stumps ground to below grade (if included). What you won't have: a lawn. Cleared land is raw ground — seeding, grading, and landscaping are separate steps.
Timeline
A small residential clearing (quarter-acre, moderate density) typically takes one day. Larger parcels or dense growth take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline at the estimate — not a number designed to get you to sign.
